Seeing Light

The evening walk to photograph a lone tree in a prairie was the plan that never materialized. This happens quite often. I have a destination and subject in mind and upon arriving something doesn’t feel right. The previsuaulized scene isn’t there. The light doesn’t look right, the sky is wrong, and the vision is gone. This is okay and part of the process. I keep an open mind and move to Plan B - start looking with the hope I can see. I decide to head down a familiar trail, but one I haven’t been on in years. Expecting nothing spectacular I told myself what I tell my students - “Look for light not subjects”. That’s all I needed to feel creative again. I walked only a 100 yards or so before the light caught my eye. Low and directional over an area of matted down prairie. This was it. I stayed and explored for over an hour until the light faded away happy with the images I was able to see.
